Robert Lester Branyan, 87, of Columbia, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017.
He was born Jan. 15, 1930 in Philadelphia, Pa. to Lester and Martha (Border) Branyan.
He married Helen Baird June 9, 1956 in Iowa City, Iowa. She survives of the home.
He graduated in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin; a masters degree in 1957 from the University of Iowa; and a PhD in 1961 from the University of Oklahoma.
He met Helen Baird while they were teachers at Iowa City High School.
He was a professor of history at the University of Missouri, Kansas City from 1960 to 1976, serving 10 years as chairman of the History Department. In July 1976, he became Dean of Graduate Studies at Central Michigan University. He finished his career at Pennsylvania State University, Schuylkill Campus, as the Director of Academic Affairs.
The couple retired in 1991 to the Lake of the Ozarks.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years; son George; a grandson; and two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by daughter Jane Danner.
A funeral service was Thursday, Jan. 26 at St. George Episcopal Church in Camdenton with Bob Johnson on the organ and the Reverend Tim Coppinger officiating.
