People have spent untold amounts of money over the years doing makeovers, painting walls, replacing flooring, and cleaning. Spring is on its way, and we will all be outside cleaning our yards, planting flowers, and making repairs that became evident over the winter. All these things do improve and make things look better.
People have done the same thing to improve their appearance. Spending money purchasing new clothes, shoes and hair styles can spice up our appearance. I have no problem with looking your best and taking care of yourself, but don’t neglect what is the most important, working on what’s inside.
King Saul had been rejected as the king and Samuel is on his journey to the house of Jesse to anoint David as the new king. Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel to determine which one would be anointed as the new king. When the first son passed before Samuel the Lord spoke to him.
1 Samuel 16:7 reads, “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (NKJV)
After seven sons had passed before the prophet Samuel, they sent for David from the field and Samuel anointed him as king.
This passage reveals so much! God is most concerned with what is going on inside of your heart.
We typically judge based on what we can see, while God looks at the heart. The heart is what God is concerned with. It all flows from the heart.
It is out of the abundance of the heart that our mouths speak. It is the heart that reveals our true values and intentions.
Spend time developing Godly character and seeing the fruit of the spirit develop in your life. You will never be disappointed when you take time to develop Godly character.
As you spend time improving the outside, don’t forget the most important things.
