The Morgan County Commission in their meeting Monday, Aug. 8 at the courthouse in Versailles, discussed the next step toward the replacement of the bridge on Old 5 south of Versailles. Residents affected by the bridge closure have expressed their concern about when the project will begin.
The commission opened six bids Monday from companies hoping to be awarded the contract for the bridge replacement project. The bids ranged from a high bid of $747,154.80 to the two lowest bids: Gene Haile Excavating at $556,131.45 and Widel Inc. at $520,448.70.
A representative from McClure Engineering will now evaluate the specifics of the two lowest bidders. If no complications are encountered with either, the Morgan County Commission will be required to award the contract to the lowest bidder. Construction could possibly begin within a few weeks, depending on the contractor’s timetable and availability.
Propst to Resign
It was announced Tom Propst, who serves as the county’s emergency management director, will be resigning, effective Aug. 31.

New Refrigerator
In other commission business, Morgan County Recorder of Deeds Nancy Boles requested the purchase of a new refrigerator in the Recorder’s Office to replace a 1940s model that is not functioning properly.
