Leonard Ross Campbell
Leonard Ross Campbell, age 88, of Versailles, passed away Monday, July 19, 2021, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. He was born September 8, 1932, in Morgan County, son of the late Charles H. and Jane Irene (Madole) Campbell.
On November 24, 1957, in Versailles, he was united in marriage to Betty D. Houchens, who preceded him in death on September 27, 1984. On January 16, 1993, in Olathe, Kansas, he was united in marriage to his surviving wife, Erma (Jobe) Campbell.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served in the Korean Conflict. He retired after thirty-seven years of service to his country.
Leonard worked for AT&T and Southwestern Bell for thirty years until his retirement. While working a full time job, he also owned and operated Campbell Family Shoe Store and managed various apartment complexes and trailer court properties.
Leonard was a founding member of the Trinity Southern Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon. He held many high ranking positions within the American Legion VFW Post 104 in Versailles including Post Commander, 1st Vice Commander, 2nd Vice Commander, Chaplin and County Commander. He was also a leader in the Southwestern Bell Pioneers, member of the Versailles Optimist Club, the Lions Club, Versailles Booster Club, past president of the Alumni Association, served as a Versailles Alderman for many years, was Mayor Pro Tem of Versailles for a short time and was president of the Oak Grove Cemetery Association.
He was an avid coin collector, reader of westerns, bowler and enjoyed dancing. Leonard was a sports enthusiast always cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals, Versailles High School sports and also working the football chain gang but, most importantly, he loved watching his children’s and grandchildren’s sports games from a front row seat.
In addition to his wife, Erma, he is survived by his sons, Charles E. Campbell and wife Cindy of Versailles, Missouri, James R. Campbell and wife Lisa of Overland Park, Kansas and Robert W. “Bo” Campbell and wife Rebecca of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Brandy Werner, Kari Hinds, Megan Morrison, Charlee Huhmann, Sarah Campbell, Lee Campbell, Jessica Campbell, Jamie McCulloch, Brock Campbell and Bailey Campbell; stepchildren, Fr. Randall J. Oswald of Thermopolis, Wyoming and Karen D. Kampe and husband Walter of Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren, Jennifer Tobin, Erica Brown and Melissa Wolf; twenty great-grandchildren and many friends.
The family received friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon, Friday, July 23rd, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles. Funeral services were held at 12:00 Noon, Friday, at the funeral home with Pastor Gary Patterson officiating.
Graveside services and interment with full military honors followed in the Versailles Cemetery.
