Julia Ann Kern, 84, of the Ivy Bend community south of Stover, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, at Boone Hospital in Columbia.
She was born June 21, 1935, on the family farm near Hiawatha, Kansas, a daughter of John and Mary Barnhisel Kreuzburg.
She married Mike Kern Dec. 18, 1965, in Oskaloosa, Kan, He survives at their home.
She was a graduate of Hiawatha High School in Hiawatha, Kan. She attended Highland Junior College receiving her associate’s degree before enrolling in Emporia State Teachers College. She graduated from Peru State College in Peru, Neb. with a degree in elementary education.
She taught fifth grade for several years before taking the position of librarian with Kansas City Kansas Community College, retiring in 1999.
The couple began coming to Lake of the Ozarks in the 1970s in the Ivy Bend community. In 2000, they moved from the Kansas City area and made Ivy Bend their permanent home.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed word game puzzles, and flower gardening.
She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and a volunteer at the Ivy Bend Food Pantry.
In addition to her husband of 53 years, she is survived by four siblings and their spouses, Arthur and Olive Kreuzburg of Colony, Kan.; Kay Wiltz of Marysville, Kan.; Mary Lynn and Richard Cramer of Great Bend, Kan., and John and Rose Kreuzburg of Hiawatha, Kan.; sister-in-law Marsha Veal of Fort Walton Beach, Fla; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Julia was preceded in death by her parents and brother Lester Kreuzburg.
A celebration of life observance is scheduled 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Lakeview Baptist Church in Ivy Bend with the Rev. Jim Bowers officiating.
Visitation is from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday, Dec. 7, at the church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lakeview Baptist Church or the Ivy Bend Food Pantry.
