Each year, at the conclusion of the livestock competitions at the Morgan County Fair in Versailles, the Herdsman Award is presented to a junior and senior 4-H or FFA member who has risen above their peers, showing excellence in all qualities that those clubs represents.
According to organizers, the winners are individuals who “exemplify great leadership skills, work ethic, honesty, integrity, and the willingness to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever needed. They possess great showmanship skills in the show ring, but most importantly outstanding citizenship skills.”
This award is the highest achievable award presented at the Morgan County Fair each year.
In 2015, Lane Holem was the recipient of the Junior Herdsman award. He worked hard throughout the fair that year, helping others prepare their animals for competition and working behind the scenes to help keep the flow of animals and contestants in order.
He rose early, and worked endless hours each day of the fair helping his fellow members, and assisting 4-H and FFA leaders, doing so with a smile on his face.
Lane passed away in September 2015, leaving a legacy of values. The Lane Holem Herdsman Award is presented in honor of Lane.
