The Versailles Rural Fire Protection District’s board of directors Thursday, Oct. 5 discussed the progress of its search for a new fire chief. The Versailles Rural Fire Protection District’s board of directors Thursday, Oct. 5 discussed the progress of its search for a new fire chief. Provisional Fire Chief M.B. “Doc” Jones and Deputy Chief Jim Towles informed the board only one applicant has put his name forward for the position. No decision was made. Last month, Jones announced his second retirement as fire chief, effective at the end of the year. He had agreed to serve one year as interim chief when he was appointed Nov. 3, 2016, after the Oct. 22, 2016 death of Fire Chief Troy Nichols. Jones previously retired in January 2015 after many years as Versailles rural fire chief.ISO review Jones reported he, district secretary/treasurer Jo Reistad, and Capt. Owen Hoover attended the district’s Thursday, Sept. 28 Insurance Services Office review. Jones said the review went well overall, and results will be available in four to six months.Service calls According to Jones, district personnel responed to 15 incidents during September, arriving within an average of 9.36 minutes. The incidents included one building fire, one garbage dump fire, nine medical assist calls, two motor vehicle accidents without injuries, one gas leak, and one call dispatched and canceled en route.Maintenance Jones reported Gasco/Ferrell Gas Co. set and filled the district’s propane tanks at the north (Excelsior) and south (Highway 5) fire stations. The board agreed to have Reistad send out notices to district personnel, seeking bids to repair and paint the bathroom at the Highway 52 and Route D fire station, damaged by water leaks. It was reported Tanker 21 was out of service, needing a new transfer case. The district’s 20-year-old four-wheeler was reported to need major repair. After considering the repair service’s advice, the board decided it would be more cost-effective to purchase a replacement. Jones and Towles were authorized to find a replacement vehicle. The board approved a guest list for the district’s firefighter Christmas party, and instructed Reistad to send the invitations during October. The board also discussed plans to have district personnel on standby at the apple festival the weekend of Saturday, Oct. 7. The Versailles rural fire board’s next regular meeting is scheduled 7 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Highway 52 and Route D fire station.
